Geometry was never a fun subject for me. I struggled horribly to understand the concepts presented in class, and I remember saying to myself in high school… why do I have to know this stuff? Points, lines, planes, shapes, angles…ahhh! This information seems so irrelevant to my life and my future. I really hope the teacher assigns the odd questions so at least I can check my answers in the back of the book!
I could not wrap my brain around the personal benefit of this type of math and preferred to go back to algebraic formulas where the equations seemed more linear and concrete.
And while I may never reap the personal benefit of studying geometry, I did come to discover the kind of equations that would change my whole life. Consider the following verse from Scripture which propose that a (you) + b (a given action) = c (a personal benefit) …
Proverbs 11:25 (emphasis mine)— “The generous will prosper; those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed.”
Do you know anyone who seems to focus on themselves? Do you have a friend who seems to always be down and discouraged? Perhaps you are feeling lonely and are wondering where God is in the midst of your hardships. I encourage you to not remain in this despair for too long, but instead look around and find someone who could use refreshing. Refreshing can be as simple as a word of praise. It can come through telling someone you prayed for them. And you know what? As you pour into others, you’ll find your own soul rising in hope, in nearness to the Lord, and a refreshed sense of joy.
Or what about this “formula” of fasting and prayer…
Isaiah 58:6-11 (emphasis mine)— “Free those who are wrongly imprisoned; lighten the burden of those who work for you. Let the oppressed go free, and remove the chains that bind people. Share your food with the hungry, and give shelter to the homeless. Give clothes to those who need them, and do not hide from relatives who need your help. Then your salvation will come like the dawn, and your wounds will quickly heal. Your godliness will lead you forward, and the glory of the Lord will protect you from behind. Then when you call, the Lord will answer. ‘Yes, I am here,’ he will quickly reply. Remove the heavy yoke of oppression. Stop pointing your finger and spreading vicious rumors! Feed the hungry, and help those in trouble. Then your light will shine out from the darkness, and the darkness around you will be as bright as noon. The Lord will guide you continually, giving you water when you are dry and restoring your strength. You will be like a well-watered garden, like an ever-flowing spring.”
Do you want the Lord to be responsive to you? Do you want to shine like a bright light in a dark place? Is your strength growing weak? Take a prayerful inventory of your days, and ask the Lord to show you how you can bless the hungry, the homeless, the disabled, and the oppressed. Do you want to be blessed in Christ? Pay attention to what God has already said and follow the formula… those who obey the Lord will never be put to shame.
While geometry was not my favorite subject, the “equations” that God gives to us in His Word bring me life and encouragement. I pray the same is true in your life.
How have you seen “God’s math” play out in your life?
