When the Lord commissioned the prophet Isaiah to go and judge the people of Israel, he responded with a willing heart saying, “Here I am! Send me.” (Isaiah 6:8). Isaiah did not know what he would be sent to do, but he did know that God was trustworthy and good. God desires believers today to have the same response when He calls them. Georgette Stilwell is a wonderful example of how God can use a willing heart to accomplish much.
Georgette is a physical therapist with a heart to help. She was eager to serve last year at the Joni and Friends Family Retreat in Spruce Lake, Pennsylvania. While there, she could not help but listen as one of the mothers shared her heart.
This devoted mother and caretaker shared that while Family Retreat was an amazing experience, it was difficult to feel like her daughter was loved and accepted the other 51 weeks of the year. Her daughter was now a young adult who struggled daily with her disability. The woman spoke with discouragement in her voice as she described how difficult it was to find a local group for young adults with disabilities in which her daughter could participate.
As Georgette traveled home from Family Retreat her mind started churning—what if my church could start a group for young adults with disability? As she settled back into her daily routine, the thought of starting a group kept coming to mind. Georgette determined to pray specifically about this potential opportunity, and after a time decided to approach her church, Blooming Glen Mennonite Church, to see if they were willing.
To her great delight, Georgette’s church was willing and excited to engage in this type of outreach! They reached out to the Joni and Friends Pennsylvania office for advice and training.
Once all the training and planning had been done, the big day arrived. On February 15th, the doors of Blooming Glen Mennonite Church were opened by thirteen volunteers who were eager to serve. They met eight new friends from the community that day! As they spent time with their new friends, they enjoyed a Bible lesson, crafts, and social time. At the same time, the moms and caregivers of these new friends were given the opportunity to enjoy a quiet cup of tea and engage with one another.
Georgette is a beautiful example of how God can use a willing heart to accomplish so much more than we might imagine. God does not need us to have the perfect plan on how we will serve Him and advance His kingdom. Instead, all He needs is a willing heart.
