“Yet I still dare to hope when I remember this: The faithful love of the Lord never ends! His mercies never cease. Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning.”—Lamentations 3:21-23 (NLT)
I must confess that I am a huge Star Wars fan. My favorite movies in the series will always be the original trilogy with Han, Luke, and Leia because they are the movies that I grew up with. But, in more recent years, I have enjoyed taking my kids to several late-night showings of the newer Star Wars films. I have distinct memories from three years ago when we found ourselves in a local theater surrounded by people dressed up as Han Solo, Chewbacca, and even Boba Fett. The energy and excitement were tangible, and a roar went up from the crowd as the music started and the scrolling verbiage told us the journey of the galaxy from long ago was about to continue.
The entire premise of these movies is good conquering evil. Despite the vast resources, armament, and strength of the evil empire, as long as there are Jedi Knights and people who believe in all that is good, there is hope that the forces of evil will be overthrown and good will flourish. In these movies, hope is based on the belief that good always wins, evil always loses, and that the mysterious Force that connects the galaxy plays a huge part in the cosmic struggle.
I wonder if this basic plot line is closer to reality than the original creators intended it to be. The Bible tells me that good always wins, that evil always loses, and that the mysterious “Force” behind the good has a name, and a personality, and that he is God Almighty!
Do you ever look at life and see the dark, oppressive, evil empire at work? Do you ever sense a loss of hope? Have you ever wanted to just crawl back into bed in the morning to escape the pending day?
Please join me in determining that 2018 will be a year of hope! Hope not based upon circumstances, finances, medical diagnoses, or friends. Instead, let us hold firmly to a hope based on the reality that God will never stop loving. He will never stop lavishing his mercy upon us. He is faithful and true, and the mornings are filled to overflowing with his mercies. He is a good God. He is a mighty God. He sees us and knows us. He stoops down in the dirt, sees our tears, and is moved with compassion on our behalf.
2018 is a year of new hope. Whatever your circumstances may be, whatever your struggles tempt you to believe, whatever might lurk over the horizon… God is for you, and this should compel you to hope. May 2018 be a year where the hope of God propels you to greater levels of worship, peace, and rest. May 2018 be a year where you embrace the fresh dose of mercies that the God of the universe hand-crafts for you daily. Be blessed this year and know that God loves you!
