“…and since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. I have given you an example to follow. Do as I have done…” – John 13:14-15, NLT
Doug Mazza, the President of Joni and Friends, often talks about the calling and mission of our ministry to be the “foot washers” of the Church. This concept comes from the story in John 13 where Jesus washed the feet of His disciples, a job that was typically left to the servant of the home. Knowing that they walked on dirty roads shared with all types of animals, this could not have been a pleasant job.
But what does it mean to wash the feet of the Church? What is God actually calling our ministry to do in relation to your church?
We are here to serve, to support, to equip, and to promote all that God is doing in your midst as it relates to disability ministry! Our heart is to empower you to serve and embrace families in your local community so that people affected by disability might fully belong in the community of your church.
That sounds great, right? But, what does this look like on a practical level?
- Resources and Training – the Irresistible Church is a website and series of resources created after years of asking local churches what their most pressing needs are regarding disability ministry. We host countless trainings throughout the year, and we are available to provide consultation and coaching for churches and ministry leaders.
- Support and Encouragement – across the country, networks of Irresistible churches are gathering together in personal and virtual spaces to learn best practices, gain encouragement, and to partner together on community outreach events. If you want to know about other churches near you, just ask! If there isn’t an existing network near you, we can support you as you launch a network in your community.
- Hands-on Ministry Experiences – whether it is serving at a Family Retreat, participating in a ministry internship, or engaging in an overseas mission trip, ministry comes alive when we stop reading about it and become part of it. Countless churches have seen their local disability ministry flourish as leaders and volunteers return home from participation in various Joni and Friends programs, “fired up” and equipped for ministry.
Regardless of what it looks like, we are here to serve. Our mission is to “…equip Christ-honoring churches worldwide to evangelize and disciple people affected by disabilities.” And we won’t stop until every church has their doors wide open to people affected by disability. It is a privilege to serve your church, and we pray that God continues to pour out His blessing and grace on your journey toward becoming Irresistible.
